June Newsletter: Spotlight on David Pakman

Spotlight On: David Pakman

By Christina Johnson

Recently I had a chance to interview David Pakman. David is the Managing Director of Vivid Edge Media Group, works exclusively in media production (radio, video, and internet). He also hosts the nationally syndicated radio program Midweek Politics, which is heard in many cities across the country on the Pacifica Radio Network, and worldwide via podcast. Vivid Edge Media Group’s website is www.vividedgemedia.com.

Occupation/Job Title? Managing Director of Vivid Edge Media Group and On-Air Host & Co-Producer of Midweek Politics Radio, syndicated radio show on Pacifica Radio

What is your educational background? Bachelor’s in communication and economics from UMass, MBA from Bentley University

Can you describe what an average work week consists of? Average work week includes going to client video shoots, talking on the phone and in person with clients to plan shoots, etc, doing paperwork and invoicing, checking in on the editing of video projects to make sure they’re coming along (I don’t do the editing), scheduling interviews for the radio show, prepping for the show and actually doing it, and then doing email marketing for both businesses.

Previous Occupations? Field Marketing Rep at BDS Marketing, salesperson at Circuit City while I was in high school and an undergrad in college

How long have you had your current job? About 5 years

Did you need any specific training for your job? Video production/direction experience, radio training on equipment and production, certainly communication and interpersonal skills

What are some opportunities for advancement? I own the business, so advancement would be the business getting bigger and hiring more people.

Why do you like your job? Is there anything you dislike? Great way to meet new people, learn about different businesses since we film with everything from scientists and ice fishermen to jewelry makers and lawyers. Having the flexibility of my own business is great, and not being in an office all day is too.

Any advice for someone who would like to get into the same job field? Intern to learn the video production or radio skills, and if you want to have your own business, learn the business skills in school, which will also let you network.
